Child support is money sent to the custodial parent to support the child/children. The child support covers food, housing, utilities, clothing, and other associated costs. Health insurance is usually separate. Medical costs may or may not be included.

Child support awards are made by each state's family court system. Pennsylvania requires that they be based on the best interests of the child. Even when guidelines are used, judges consider the facts of a case and other statutes. They can depart from the child support guidelines for considerations such as how property is divided, whether unpaid child support exists, and what the difference is in the parents' incomes.
